A survey of 2,000 van insurance customers by Swinton Commercial found that 87% had either bought or updated security equipment for their vehicle in the past 18 months.

The most popular crime prevention methods were:

1. Immobilisers

2. Trackers

3. Additional door locks

4. Steering locks

Of those questioned, 61% were most concerned about the contents of their van, and 22% about the vehicle itself. When asked why they were more worried about security a whopping 91% believed that the recession could lead to a greater degree of crime.

A safety conscious 91% said that they would never leave their van unlocked and unattended, but admitted to doing this regularly two years ago.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton, said: “In some areas of the UK, the recession has led to increases in petty crime. However, this has had a positive effect on our van drivers as they are becoming increasingly more safety conscious.

Cole was pulled over in his Lamborghini Gallardo on the A3 in Kingston, Surrey by police in November 2008, when a speed gun recorded him driving at 104mph in a 50mph zone.

Swinton, the UK’s leading high street retailer of car insurance , is warning motorists to ensure that they stick to the speed limits or they could face a ban and fine of up to Pounds Sterling 2,500.

This level of speeding is a serious offence which can sometimes result in an immediate disqualification from driving. A driving ban can often be in the region of 28 days but can also be substantially longer for repeat offences.”

Swinton estimate that over six million drivers in the UK now have points on their licence, and that the UK’s 6,000 speed cameras record over two million drivers speeding each year.

Steve Chelton explains: “As well as the punishment dealt by the legal system following a speeding offence, Ashley Cole should be aware of the extra costs of car insurance as a result of this offence. Failure to notify your insurance company of penalty points on your licence can put your insurance policy in jeopardy should you have to make a claim.”

Swinton announced last year that they wouldn’t automatically penalise drivers for gaining points resulting from speed cameras and set up a dedicated unit last year to deal with the increasing demand for car insurance for pointed drivers.
